Pet photography is quickly becoming a specialty at Ray Johnston Photography, especially with Ray's love for pets.  Ray uses unique studio lighting to really capture the eyes and coat with 3D clarity.  We really enjoyed working with these unique, Silver Miniature Poodles, Marquis (male) and Bijou (female) at the studio last week.  The Swarovski Crystal collar - www.Here-KittyKitty.com and different hats really enhanced the charming character to the dogs.  The Poodle Network is sharing some of these images within Photos - see their slide show - www.thepoodlenetwork.com  Enjoy!!!

This week we had the pleasure of photographing Dennis Eagan, founder of Wild Yoga and regionally renowned instructor of Teachers Training yoga courses.  Dennis is in charge of the Teachers Advanced Studies course at the Bo Tree here in Davis, CA , and was looking to update his portfolio.  In  addition to needing a traditional headshot, he also needed action shots that highlighted his skill, strength, and mastery of poses in a simple and clean visual manner.  Because of Ray's own personal yoga training he has the knowledge of poses to capture the correct form for a yogi / yogini's photography portfolio.  Using a variety of lighting techniques, Ray photographed Dennis in the studio, using his knowlege of yoga poses to capture the poses from the best possible angle.  The shoot resulted in so many dynamic images it was hard to choose our favorites to share!

Who says photographers never get peed on?  At a recent shoot we were photographing little Sean and lo and behold he decided the freeing sensation of being suspended in the air between mom and dad was so liberating that he should just let go!  So there Ray was shooting away, the parents are cracking up, and the father, straight in the line of fire was trying to plug the gush.  The assistant ran to the rescue with a well-needed diaper and saved dad from getting drenched.  Needless to say, this is a shoot the parents will never forget!  Watch out little Sean, mom's gonna bring that one out for some teenage blackmail!

We are always looking for new ways to highlight the special bond between mother and baby.  In a recent session with Shante and her 3 month baby Elle-Marie we captured some priceless images that just exude the love between the two.  Using a special artistic back lighting technique, we were able to get some high contrast profile shots that truly accentuate and focus in on the connection and relationship between mother and child.

Some of our favorite images from an 8 week baby session that were so beatiful and stunning in their black and white simplicity that we just had to share. Enjoy!

Images like these remind us how important it is to capture those fleeting nascent moments before they fade.

Congratulations Sarah!

We wanted to share some images of a recent graduate of our Baby's First Year program.  We have been photographing Sarah over the past year, chronicling her development from birth to one year.  We ended her first year of photography with an outdoor session in the Davis Arboretum, and we captured some amazing photographs of her that really show her sparkling little personality and budding beauty.  It struck us again how important capturing the stages during the first year is, as we saw how much Sarah changed over her first year, and how amazing it was to capture those precious changes in development and personality in such a lasting artistic form: photography.

We wanted to share some of our favorite images from this session in addition to a progression of a final large wall portrait edit we did on her parents favorite photograph from the entire year.  As you can see there were three stages in the editing process - the first image is straight from the camera with simple contrast and saturation adjustments, the second image underwent our Select editing, and the final image that we prepared for large scale print on a canvas texture had extensive artistic Signature editing performed on it.  Can you see all the changes we made?
